There are so many skills one can improve readily without ever measuring them, including foreign language skill, dancing, yoga, music, knitting... almost anything that requires practice and imitation. Of course, perhaps you COULD measure various parts of these skills, but to assess the whole improvement requires some subjective judgment.
Yes , you are nearly to the point.As you when you come to complex system, you always a need a function to define. If you are able to define a function you can always process.As you can process you can enhance, restore, degrade anything. Thus, you get complete control over the situation.
